Opening play
AllStars TT (Table Tennis) is a web-based application enabling table tennis game and score tracking for individuals and groups. Rather than focussing on winners and losers, pros and beginners, it’s all about participation.
Tim Holtam from Brighton Table Tennis Club has long been involved in bringing all corners of the community together through ping pong with various outreach programs. Brighton Table Tennis Club is testament to the incredible community power and synergy derived from an inclusive sport that goes well beyond a bat and ball.
After the success of the physical club, Tim wanted to go global. His dream was to spread the community connection of table tennis – go viral!
The app, loosely based on the parkrun concept, philosophy and values, was to provide a platform open to anyone to register and keep match record to share the love of table tennis and connect with their family, friend or club groups.
The app also caters to prison groups which are part of the outreach program. This required special consideration to accommodate for prisoner anonymity and prohibited use of web-enabled devices.
Newism’s role
Demonstrating that we bring so much more to a project than code and beautiful design, Newism collaborated closely with Tim and his brains-trust to deliver a concept strategy and solution design.
After working through lots of ‘what-ifs’ and user scenarios, the plan was solidified. Months of code crunching and user focussed interface design followed, and in late 2024 the Allstars TT platform (version 1.0) was launched.
Outcome
As a first-release and proof of concept, the app is web-based rather than developing a native IOS and a native Android App. This is to facilitate more rapid, ongoing feature development and to reduce overall costs. A native smartphone app is planned for the future.
After soft launch, the Allstars TT platform is acing it with big hits across UK table tennis groups. It is expected to go viral once it is officially launched and promoted world-wide.
